What is sports massage?

Well for starters let’s just say it’s not solely for athletes.

Sports massage is a deeper form of massage which is perfect for those experiencing chronic pain, discomfort, muscular tension and more. It involves the use of a mixture of effleurage, petrissage and trigger point techniques to break down tissues, promote healthy blood flow And flush out toxins.

A normal sports massage treatment can last anywhere between 25 and 90 minutes where you can expect to feel a significant difference afterwards. Many people attend clinics for the first time with symptoms such as shoulder, neck or lower backpain, . Most of the time this is unfortunately due to modern day and our obsessive habits of phone usage, over working within an office environment, manual handling stresses and sporting injuries.

Our bodies are amazing machines which have 11 systems within them working simultaneously to keep us alive. Each of these systems following their individual functions day in day out. For example of our circulatory system is what keeps our blood pumping, respiratory system keeps us breathing, digestive system with it’s huge impact on nutrient absorption and one of the most important our muscular system to keep us together and moving.

So when we start to feel a bit sore and crave that massage therapist digging their elbows into our glutes (..ok fine that was a bit too far...that stuff hurts!) But you get the idea... we crave that pressure and manipulation directly to our aching muscles. This is exactly where sports massage comes in to save the day. Those nasty knots that appear out of nowhere or grow bigger overtime are literally just your muscle fibres clumped and stuck together called adhesions. Adhesions can be caused by multiple lifestyle factors on the muscle tissue from overuse, over stretching, poor posture and so on. When they occur it’s is our body’s response to protecting that area by essentially padding it out and supporting the fibres. Now imagine each of those microscopic strands of fibre with its own little tunnel for blood supply...when they clump together those tunnels become constricted, preventing that healthy blood flow from streaming through. We need this blood flow to carry oxygen, energy and flush out toxins from those tissues and essentially repair them.

A sports massage therapist will not only be applying different variations of pressure and techniques to your muscles but they will also assist your recovery & mobilisation by performing passive stretching to help you find comfortable movement patterns again.
