What are the benefits of Sports Massage?

Updated: Dec 16, 2022

There are many but to list a few:

  • Reduced muscular tension

  • Reduction in chronic pain

  • Improved sleep quality

  • Decreased stress and anxiety

  • Promotes recovery

  • Improved flexibility/mobility

  • Reduction in headaches

  • Improved athletic performance

  • ..and let’s be honest. We all love a good rant sometimes to our therapist.

So what to expect when you attend a sports massage appointment?

When you attend a sports massage clinic you will be greeted by a therapist. They will then complete a client consultation form with you. This form will gather all the information a therapist needs about you such as medical history, emergency contacts, personal data, current conditions and use this to decide whether it is safe for you to continue. Once consent is given, some may then complete a physical assessment/screening of you to see your movement patterns and posture to be able to tailor the best treatment for you.

After this induction phase is complete you can then finally relax on the massage couch and let the therapist do the work. Expect to have some form of cream or lotion applied to your skin as this helps with friction during the treatment and also benefit the condition of your own skin. The therapist will then use a variety of techniques to help warm and manipulate the muscle tissues, tendons, joints and so on whilst occasionally completing stretching in-between. Some moments may feel more intense then others but it’s very important you communicate with the therapist if you are experiencing too much discomfort or even if you feel you would like more pressure. The best advice is to just focus on your breathing. We definitely don’t want to be holding our breaths as that will cause us to become ridged and unmoveable as we want that fresh flush of oxygen and blood flow as often as possible to help promote repair.

After a treatment a therapist will retake you through the screening and movement tests to see if any improvement has occurred.

How you feel post sports massage?

After a massage you may feel slightly dizzy. This is completely normal as you have been lying still whilst your body has been adjusted and manipulated to improve it’s functions. Also blood pressure may be affected due to inactivity or over stimulation.

You may also feel bunged up with a blocked nose. Now this one is a great sign that all that nasty toxin which is flowing around your system is being filtered through. Just make sure you are drinking more water post treatment to help flush this out.

You may feel bruised or sore as if you’ve had an intense training session. This again is a positive response from the treatment as it now means your body is in its repairing phase on those broken down tissues.

Some clients expectations an emotional overwhelming feeling. This is due to a lot of stress and tension being held within the body suddenly released. Not just that but also many people do not vent their emotions to other people or simply let their bodies rest for half hour and switch the world off.

So if you experience any of the above that is a completely normal and positive response to a sports massage treatment. Just ensure you are:

  • Drinking plenty of water.

  • Eating nutritious foods

  • Taking time to just rest and repair yourself

  • Using arnica cream or advancing cold showers to help with bruising

  • Not doing any physical activity post treatment (other than work which you can’t help at times)

Overall sports massage is a great recovery tool to add to your lifestyle to help boost your Wellbeing inside and out. Why not book your first session with us:
